week 2 ... work has gotten more intense
Today, I appreacited the fact that my group members were all present in class so we could have agreed on working with each other for the rest of the semester. Although we had a small issue it was dealt with and we are all now comfortable and ready to work together.
Today, we started atmospheric energy and class was indeed an informative class as we started to really think about how we are explaining diagrams and the questions that can be formed based on how you explain it. We (my Group members and I) understood the concept of the picture based on previous knowledge and also from what we had learnt in class.
My personal view on class today was that Miss assumed that we were all in a bad mood but honestly that's how we are and it is a long trip from south on mornings so this what she saw this morning was something normal. DON'T BE SCARED!!! What i dislike about every class is that we are timed to do assignments within the class. This is something that we are not really used to but we are trying to cope with it and adapt to this new technique. Sometimes it makes me feel as though I am in primary school again. Although i understand that we are limited for time and have to move quickly but this just my opinion.
Thanks for this post, Andrea. It is the first one that will be marked. Please remember to use your rubric when writing your posts.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you raised the issue of time. Time-on-task is a critical concept in education (see https://feaweb.org/time-on-task-a-teaching-strategy-that-accelerates-learning for one discussion). As a teacher you would always be faced with managing the limited time you have to teach. What strategies for managing time will you adopt as a teacher? How will you ensure that your students stay on task? Looking forward to your responses.
Additionally Andrea, please clarify what you meant by the statements "DON'T BE SCARED." and "Sometimes it makes me feel like I am in primary school again." Looking forward to your responses.
DeleteWhat i meant by DON'T BE SCARED is that this is how we are on a normal day sometimes we come to school in a good mood or a bad mood and it may change during the day based on what is happening around us.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it makes me feel like i am in primary school again, meaning that we are being deprived of our freedom in the classroom. The norm is that we come to school have a 3hr lecture with questions and explanations, not where we are being limited within the classroom to do group work and work with each other. Yes i understand that time is limited and we pressed for time in the classrom to cover the content but we don't have a choice based on assignments and who we work with for these assignments and now class time is timed for us to work. Also, time-on-task is indeed a critical concept in education, yes i have used it before and it does work but i do not think that it should be in our classroom setting. We need some leniency and to feel more comfortable in the classroom environment as i have learnt previously that as prospectives teachers that we must be accountable for the learning environment for our students.
In terms of ensuring that my students stay on task and what strategies for managing time i will adopt as a teacher ... i will use this same strategy but i will work around it in terms of giving students a say in the task as to what they like doing in the classroom and what makes their learning fun and willing to learn more. Time management within the classroom has not been a problem for me and i believed that i have mastered this technique.
Thanks for your reply, Andrea. Your explanation helped to clarify my understanding of your post. I would be interested to hear what "freedom in the classroom" looks like to you. Please explain.
DeleteThe class is set up in a way that much of the content is online. You are expected to do your readings BEFORE class and come with questions. What I have been doing in class is treating with some of the difficult concepts, and using unique strategies to help you remember them. It is expected that you would then return to your readings and make sense of them in the context of the class activities.
If you review the course outlines, you will see that in addition to the content objectives, there are several related to building collaboration, communication and team-work. These are critical skills for you to experience as learners so that you can transfer them to your own students. As I said on the first day, I will also use a variety of teaching styles, other than the lecture, question, discussion format, because that is quite common or "normal" in your life as a student.
While you have mastered time management, it may be an issue for others. You should probably reflect more deeply on why exactly being required to work to time on a specific task, is such a concern for you. That is the level of critical thinking I hope this blog inspires.
Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your future posts.
